In Wake Up, Baby! Along the way, I share my own experiences—both painful and joyful—from my voyage on this planet to show what is possible when one finds the path to liberation. The journey, however, is a universal one. Chapter 1: A Journey of Awakening
The snow in the small, picturesque town of Maplewood had turned to dark slush on that mild Monday in February, 1993 when Lila drove all the way from her boyfriend’s apartment in New York City to my home to feed my two kitty cats. On this moonless night she arrived at 10 p.m., unlocked the back door at 108 Maple Lane, walked in the pitch-black house and put the key down on the kitchen table. When she turned on the lights she noticed a few bottles of vodka and rum on the kitchen counter. How weird, Lila thought. She knew I didn’t drink alcohol except for one glass of wine at dinner.
Lila was more than my next door neighbor; she was a dear friend, a sweetheart with spirited hazel green eyes and a childlike spunky demeanor I embraced. She worked at the Bronx Zoo as the marketing director and loved animals as much as I. We had become close over the last years. Her new boyfriend was a French chef, and she enjoyed spending romantic nights brushing up on her French at her lover’s nest.
Pompom and Minoux meowed at her feet, happy to see her. Lila opened a can of food, placed it in their bowls and gave them their meals. The large bottles of liquor kept bothering her. With an eerie sensation in her gut she decided to investigate. She walked to my garage, opened the door and saw my red Jetta parked there.
“Shit! Why would Vivi have me feed her cats when she’s here? I don’t get it. Vivi!” She called as she climbed the stairs to my bedroom in the dark. “Vivi, where are you, girlfriend?” She pushed open my bedroom door, saw me sprawled out nude in my bed, and rushed to my side. “Vivi, Vivi. Wake up!”
The light from the street lantern penetrated my bedroom window. She put her hand on my forehead, noticed an emptied bottle of Chivas scotch and an emptied bottle of Xanax on my bed. Lila pushed harder on my shoulder trying to wake me up, and became distraught by the touch of my icy, rag-doll body.
